Geological, ecological and hydrometeorological studies of the environment

Master's Degree, Institute of Earth sciences

05.04.00 Earth sciences

Program length: 2 years

Language of study: Russian

Place of study: Rostov-on-Don

Purpose of this educational program:

Geologists take the best from other sciences and apply it to the study of Earth. They investigate Earth materials, the properties and structures of those materials, Earth processes and evolution, the history of our planet, and natural hazards and related phenomena. Geological and earth sciences/geosciences largely focus on the physical aspects of the Earth, such as its composition and structure, as a fully integrated system. Geology majors can use their skills to conduct research in the field, coordinate work around natural resources or make maps and charts for use in public and private industry.

The significant complication of engineering tasks, a sharp increase in the scale and intensity of interaction between society and the environment, increases the need for highly qualified personnel in the field of engineering surveys and subsoil use. In the difficult natural conditions of the world, geologists, ecologists, and hydrometeorologists face high demands. Graduates should not only have the skills to study rocks as the foundations of buildings and structures, but also to justify their rational placement; and also to carry out mining taking into account all natural factors in order to minimize negative man-made impacts on the environment

Training of future specialists who wish to be omniscient in the studies Geology and be highly demanded specialists in the geological sphere.

Advantages of this study program:

  • The main advantage of students is their high demand in the labor market and competitiveness.
  • Implementation of an individual approach to each graduate. Student implementation of the educational process by doctors and candidates of sciences (100%).
  • Using online technologies and inclusion in the curriculum of online courses. Free access to specialized libraries and leading Russian and foreign electronic educational resources.
  • After several years of successful work, the graduate takes a senior position or creates his own organization. Students with a penchant for scientific research have the opportunity to prove themselves at Olympiads, conferences of various levels, round tables and other professional events.
  • Students will be able to choose modules depending on their research interests and the needs of their future professional activities. The formation of professional competencies will take place in conditions as close as possible to real production ones under the guidance of recognized specialists in the study of soils as the foundations of buildings and structures, their placement, taking into account rational environmental management, etc.
  • Communication with leading Russian and foreign experts in the field of geology, engineering geology, ecology, hydrometeorology, etc.
  • The opportunity to participate in the implementation of national projects aimed at the spatial development of the country: "Housing and urban environment", "Ecology", etc.

Prospects. Career & Employment

After completing their studies, competitive, practice-oriented graduates are in demand on the labor market in the following leading sectors of the Russian economy:

  • mineral resources: design and survey organizations related to the development of infrastructure of mining complexes;
  • environmental monitoring and prevention of negative consequences of mining
  • oriented to work in the north and the northeast of the country;
  •  construction, an integral part of which is engineering surveys exploring the geological and natural conditions of the territory of the Russian Federation and other countries.

Possible Careers for Geology Majors:

  • Engineering Geologists
  • Hydrogeologist
  • Geophysicist
  • Geochemist
  • Oceanographers
  • Seismologists
  • Paleontologists
  • Petroleum geologists, etc.

Our graduates will be well qualified to apply PhD programs in Russian and foreign universities.
